Consider using the Barnes exhibit categories (Landscape, Portraiture, Still Life, Genre, History) as a framework for your project.

Create a dialogue between one or more of the works/photographers you’ve been intrigued by.

Further explore/investigate your relationship with the photographic as it relates to your social media experience/identity.

Use one of the Photo-essay platforms I’ve posted links to (or social media that has story functions/applications) to create a short photo-essay, and reflect about the parameters & assumptions the platform embeds about what photographic story-telling is, and how it presents itself.

Curate an exhibit and explore the photographic practice of some of your friends, either on through social media posts or if they are photographers themselves, their own work. Or, have them present a portfolio/series, and present an analysis of this work, as it relates to larger traditions we’ve explore here.

Create several collages, or if you’d like memes, as long as they appropriate several images in their construction.

Using still frames from films/TV shows, create a chapter of a Foto-Novel; it needn’t be an “actual” film, as you might consider appropriating from several films/media pieces to create a speculative Foto-Novel; I’ve posted about 600 images from 15 or so films we explore in the horror class you are welcome to choose from. Or select your own material.

Or develop (or expand upon one, if you’ve explored this in an earlier assignment) a pattern typology study, using film stills — interior design, color schemes, landscape/second unit footage, etc. A Foto-novel that tells a story of patterns, not character narrative.

Using Robert Lynd’s guidelines in the pdf below (from The Likes of Us: FSA photography, at end of pdf), go assignment in your own home space to capture the American patterns he suggests observing; Lynd was one of the pre-eminent sociologists (with his with Helen) of his generation. Middletown (1925) & Middletown in Transition (1939) were two of their key studies of American types/community. Consider the “Main Street” in your home space, or key common areas (malls, cultural centers/venues, transit centers); this needn’t be people, as Lynd emphasizes with his extensive listing of American spaces…buildings, squares/parks, streets might be your focus. If you select this, highlight the sections of Lynd’s guide that you decided to focus upon.
