FMST 201 Book Assignment Details

FMST 201 offers an in-depth exploration of family decision-making processes for a wide range of wants and needs. The five-step decision-making process includes recognizing existing needs, identifying alternatives to fulfill identified needs, evaluating identified alternatives to meet needs, implementing alternatives, and evaluating the alternatives selected. How families identify, use, produce, and manage resources is not rigid – a range of historical, environmental, and cultural influences make family decision making processes, and family resource management, different for everyone.

This book review offers an opportunity to explore family resource management issues by applying course concepts to real experiences. Select one of the pre-approved books listed below to read for this assignment. After reading the book, you will write a 3-4 page paper demonstrating your ability to interpret, evaluate, compare, and critique the experiences of the characters highlighted in the story. This paper must be written using 12-point Times New Roman font with double-spaced lines and standard one-inch margins on all sides. You must also format your paper using APA style and include the following: title page, running head, page numbers, headings, in-text citations of course content, and a reference page (you need only reference the textbook and the book you choose for this assignment).

Your paper must include the following information:

  • Summary of the book: What happened? Who was involved? Where and when did the events depicted take place? Identify the individual, family, and group memberships of the primary characters and social institutions that are involved in the story.
  • Summary of the social issues presented:What are the individual, family, and larger social issues/problems being faced by the primary characters and social institutions depicted in the book? What put the primary characters at risk for experiencing this social issue/problem? What historical, environmental, social, economic, and cultural contexts are influencing the primary characters and their experiences?
  • Analysis of the decision-making process and resolution planning: What steps in the decision-making process were depicted by the primary characters? How did the characters engage with each other and with other social institutions? Critique the need, access, availability, and use of resources by the primary characters. What individual, family, and community barriers and supports to resolution of the social problems were depicted? Were the issues resolved? If so, how?
  • Critical reflection: Select one of the primary characters depicted in this book; if given the opportunity, what could he or she have done differently?
