Leadership and management are two distinct qualities. Warren G. Bennis is quoted as saying, “Managers do things right. Leaders do the right thing”. The main difference between leaders and managers is that leaders have people follow them while managers have people work for them. This is not to say that a good manager can’t be a good leader. Nor does it imply that good leaders are not good managers either. It’s all a matter of style. According to Marquis and Huston (2009), the functions of management include planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and controlling (Marquis & Huston, 2009). A successful business person should be both a good manager and good leader in order to further their success. A good leader must apply the principles of management to be effective as well, and vice versa.

Many nurses are being called to help in leadership roles (Meliniotis, 2015). I believe in the mission and vision of my organization; therefore, I can expand my influence to create a change by taking advantage of these leadership/management qualities. Through worker involvement, effective communication, training of junior staff, and delivery of important feedback to leadership and management. I will continue to support my staff by acting both as a mentor and role model, and inspiring and encouraging my staff to keep them highly motivated towards achieving organization mission and goals. I would be aware of such things as leading by example for leadership and best staffing procedures of good managers. And both must be concerned with employee and patient satisfaction.
