General Summary

Under general supervision of the Domestic Violence Program Coordinator, the Domestic Violence Intervention Specialist, is responsible for providing direct support, crisis intervention, case management and advocacy for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking that have been identified as victims in the medical center. Intervene with patients, providing assistance in safety planning, lethality assessment, advocacy, resource linkage, and emotional support to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking who are treated here at R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center and the University of Maryland Medical Center. Provides both practical advocacy services and support to domestic violence or sexual assault survivors and their children.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

  1. Works with survivors to formulate and maintain relevant, meaningful case plans.
  2. Develops and maintains case records that document services provided to survivors.
  3. Provides concrete case management and current, effective, in – house and external resources to survivors.
  4. Interfaces with the client, in the office and the community, on a regular basis to help him/her negotiate community resources and achieve personal goals. Develops individual action plans; serves as a role model for the client, acts as an advocate and accompany clients in court settings, and provides crisis intervention and/or conflict mediation when needed.
  5. Works cooperatively and professionally with hospital staff and displays an understanding of and performs all duties in accordance with the Hospital’s Mission and Policies. Communicates both verbally and through documentation with staff regarding the intervention, outcome and resources provided.
  6. Advocates on behalf of survivors with community service providers. Meets regularly with survivors to support survivor empowerment. Conducts intakes and assessments with potential clients. Facilitates/ co – facilitates support group as assigned.
  7. Provides face to face assessment to survivors to determine intervention, safety plan, housing goals, and objectives. Interact with survivors and team members on a daily basis. Assists in the daily operations of the program as needed.
  8. Participates in staff meetings, case conferences, and other meetings as needed. Builds service partnerships with community – based organizations, including participating on community task forces as assigned. Project a good role model, keeping confidentialities in dealing with clients/ staff. Follows all VOCA grant goals, objectives, and outcomes.
  9. Attend trainings and continuing education activities as assigned. Completes VOCA timesheets weekly.
  10. Participates in 24 hour on –call backup rotation.

  1. Previous experience working with victims of domestic violence and sexual assault preferred.
  2. Bachelor’s degree in Sociology, Psychology, Social Work or related field preferred or equivalent experience and training.
  3. At least two (2) years of relevant work experience in community outreach, health care, and/or social services.
  4. Background in substance abuse, mental health, traumatic stress and/or domestic violence/ sexual assault preferred.
