I live in nothern Michigan, it is a population of english speaking white americans that have very little exposure to diversity. It is easy to forget that minorities have such a difficult time seeking health care. I work in a family practice office that has a high population of medicaid insured patients and elderly. After reading the “Health Disparity and Structural Violence” article, it is easy to agree that structual violence perpetuates health disparity. the fear that was portrayed among the people of the study brings to light the difficulty that follows when it comes to seeking health care. one quote that helped my understanding of the difficulty to seek healthcare was “although diabetes may kill you someday, its not going to kill you today”. Its like they are saying its okay to put that kind of disease on the back burner because its not going to interupt the day to day. Fear is created by the lack of funds to be able to pay for a hospital visit. other factors that induce fear are cultural bias, immigration status, language barriers, poverty, and discrimination. the article stated that one of the biggest barriers that impacted fear is cost. I can also see how language barriers would pose a problem, for example when a bill was sent in english to a spanish speaking patient, this creates a problem because the spanish speaking patient has no idea what that piece of paper says or what its for.
