These standards will influence and guide both your unit-level plans and your daily classroom activities. Keep in mind, that your culminating activity for this course will be to create an outline of an inquiry-based ELA unit following the model on page 62 of Wilhelm. In addition to the topics listed, you will need to add a section on the NYS ELA Common Core Learning Standards.
State Standards Activity
For the first part of this assignment, you will begin by reading Chapter 3 of Wilhelm, paying special attention to pages 62 and 63. Then, review the NYS ELA Common Core Learning Standards for grades 5-12, focusing on a specific grade level of your choice, between grades 7 and 12. Next, select one of the three main ELA categories – reading, writing, speaking/listening. Complete the State Standards Activity on page 47 of Wilhelm.
Lesson Idea
For the second part of this assignment, you will select an idea that you would like to teach that addresses one of the standards for the grade level you selected in part one of this assignment. Then, write a 2-5 paragraph description of your idea, and how you would address the standard you selected in your teaching.
