1) DISCUSSION QUESTION

We have seen in the news how certain companies are portrayed as having a negative impact on the environment either through carelessness or negligence. Take a moment and answer the following questions dealing with business and the environment:

  • Based on what you see in the news, do you think that companies really care if they negatively impact the environment? Why or why not?
  • What are your thoughts on the need for stronger laws and stiffer penalties for causing the environment harm through negligence? What recommendations would you make?

2)PEER REVIEW(DESTINY)

Hello everyone,

  • Based on what you see in the news, do you think that companies really care if they negatively impact the environment? Why or why not?

I’m somewhat in between on this topic. I believe that some companies care, on the other hand, they argue that they’re aren’t reasonable regulations in place that would benefit both parties. Now, there are companies that cover up how they negatively impact the by appearing to be “Green”. A great example would be Duke Energy. As mention in an article by Yarow, Jim Roger talks about clean energy but is operating in the opposite direction (Business Insider, 2009)

  • What are your thoughts on the need for stronger laws and stiffer penalties for causing the environment harm through negligence? What recommendations would you make?

It’s simple! I agree that there should be stricter laws and regulations in place. There is not only a negative impact on the environment, it affects the health and lives of humans. Action shouldn’t be taken after harm is done. We should be avoiding it at all cost or shutting the company down. Some companies look forward to paying a fine in order to operate they way they want to.

3) PEER REVIEW (HENRY)

  • We have seen in the news how certain companies are portrayed as having a negative impact on the environment either through carelessness or negligence. Take a moment and answer the following questions dealing with business and the environment
  • Based on what you see in the news, do you think that companies really care if they negatively impact the environment? Why or why not?
    • I believe most care until they’re caught and some really do care but don’t really know.. Lets look at those big chemical companies dumping and polluting the air: In Ringwood, New Jersey, Ford Motor Co. dumped more than 35,000 tons of toxic paint sludge onto lands occupied for centuries by the Turtle Clan of the Ramapough Lenape tribe, poisoning groundwater with arsenic, lead and other harmful chemicals (https://www.publicintegrity.org/2017/08/17/21086/industrial-waste-pollutes-america-s-drinking-water). And we cause air pollution directly through our use of electricity, fuels, and transportation. We also cause air pollution indirectly, when we buy goods and services that use energy in their production and delivery. Most of this air pollution we cause results from the burning of fossil fuels, such as coal, oil, natural gas, and gasoline to produce electricity and power our vehicles (http://www.cleanerandgreener.org/resources/air-pollution.html). Dumping waste into our waters is carelessness and something many big companies do to get rid of pollutants expeditiously. Knowing they can destroy the economy, I really do not think they care at all except for the funds steadily increasing. Now we as consumers who drive cars and fly or whatever means of transportation we use, do not intentionally know that we are killing the environment. We may know but may think it is a small amount of damage for one car and not realizing it is millions of drivers. Therefore we are all destroying our health and planet with chemicals we need and chemicals we don’t need.
  • What are your thoughts on the need for stronger laws and stiffer penalties for causing the environment harm through negligence? What recommendations would you make?
  • I think the government knows of these companies destroying the environment but because some of our congressmen lobby for these bad companies they get a clean slate and no one knows or they do know from sickness but excuses are made to cover up their injustices. Yes Stiffer penalties like heavy financial fines, laws that allow daily inspection (like overseas inspections-Iraq), and closure of the company destroying the land with negligence should be in place. When I say closure I mean like for a month until they find a solution to fix the problem. If not permanent closure. I do think laws are written in place for these negligences, but hey if they got money why obey the law. Leaders must act in order for the people to be heard.
