The video clip “Thinking on the Job” in the Webtext this week illustrates the importance of critical thinking, especially in work contexts. Define “critical thinking” in your own words. Discuss a time in either your work or personal life in which you needed to be able to use critical thinking to either solve a problem or acquire a skill.

How would you show a potential employer that you possess solid critical thinking skills? Be specific and detailed! Can individuals increasetheir critical thinking skills? If you believe they can, explain specific steps people can take to improve their critical thinking.

RESPOND TO FOLLOWING STATEMENT:

In my line of work, we get targeted a lot for credit card scams where someone tries to buy from you without meeting you and pays with a credit card. By the time the trancsaction has taken place, goods have been delivered and, a few weeks down the road, the credit card transaction is reported as fraud so the person receiving the goods has them and the person supplying goods is out all of the money. Before this became a mainstream practice, I was forced with having to make a decision when approached with this type of purchase. I asked is the information accurate and should I just take the easy sale and make easy money or is there mor to it? Instead of just proceeding, I used online resources to do checks on the person (based on the name they provided), the address (who owned it, etc) and if others had been exposed to similar sales opportunities and what my exposure could be. After analyzing all data, I determined that something was not right and decided to not follow up and complete this transaction. In the end, I made nothing but lost nothing. If I did not use critical thinking in this situation then, at a minimum, I would have been out $3500.
