Select TWO of the following questions and, using your own words and phrasing, answer in paragraph form, writing in formal academic style.

1.      What is a counter argument and what purpose does it serve in an argumentative essay?

2.      How could Bloom’s taxonomy be employed to help a student prepare for a multiple choice exam and a paper in which they have to place an external source within the context of their course?

3.      A student has found similar information for an essay in three different sources – a government website, a peer-reviewed document, and a newspaper article. Which source (or sources) should the student use and cite within their academic paper and why?

  1. In this course, we have identified a number of ways in which information can be brought into long-term memory. A student is finding that she is having trouble remembering key concepts during in-class tests. In a short paragraph, identify one reason why this might be the case and suggest one solution to the difficulty.
  2. Define the terms “revising” and “editing” and identify the differences between the two processes.

Select TWO of the following questions and, using your own words and phrasing, answer in paragraph form, writing in formal academic style.

  1. Explain the way in which fallacies affect the strength of one’s argument. Using one example of a fallacy, demonstrate the effect that the fallacy can have on a chain of reasoning.

2.      The newspaper recently ran a headline saying “Survey says 9 out of 10 Winnipeggers agree we should get rid of speed limits”, what could be misleading or flawed about this finding?

  1. In evaluating the reasons for any particular conclusion, we have learned to look for rival causes. In a short paragraph, define the term rival cause and explain why it is important to consider such causes before accepting a conclusion.
  2. In this course, we have discussed the advantages and disadvantages that various forms of evidence provide to a writer. Explain the advantages and disadvantages of using personal experience as evidence and explain why personal experience is not generally used in academic writing.
  3. In this course, we have identified loaded language as being problematic for academic writers. Explain why loaded language is problematic and why politicians and advertising campaigns continue to use loaded language despite these problems.

Select ONE passage from the following two options and review it critically. Write an essay in which you: 1) identify the arguable proposition; 2) the reasons for the proposition; 3) the flaws of the passage; and, 4) identify the ways in which the argument could be improved.

1.      Criminals don’t register firearms, so why does Canada keep maintaining a gun registry? We don’t need a gun registry. What we need is common sense. If you are a cop, you must keep your eyes open, your ears open and assume that if you are going after bad guys, they may have weapons. If cops don’t know this, someone hasn’t trained them properly. If we’re going to start registering guns should we be expected to register our kitchen knives too? Put one of those in a whackjob’s hands and they can be just as deadly as a gun. Last time I was on a plane they wouldn’t let me through security with nailclippers even. Use some of that money that you save from the gun registry to create better schools and training programs for cops.

2.      We are constantly encouraged to eat right, drink less, exercise more, and sleep more.  This is advice to keep our hearts healthy.  According to a study in North America adults do not meet the standards for healthy levels of physical activity, consumption of fruits and vegetables, body fat, and smoking.  The researchers say that everyone has to make the decision to either change their lifestyle or die of heart disease.  I heard that Bob, a trainer from the reality show Biggest Loser just suffered a heart attack.  He survived but what does that say about the healthy lifestyle.  By his own account he ate right, exercised daily, did not smoke, and drank in moderation.  So, it appears that even someone who did everything right could still have a heart attack.  That means that we really don’t have to worry about trying to get healthy as it doesn’t appear to make a difference in who gets sick and who doesn’t.  I say keep eating what you want and doing what you want.  Eating chips and chocolate bars will not lead to certain death nor will drinking that large bottle of pop.  So enjoy life, and stop worrying since worry can also cause heart attacks.
