Rational decision-making refers to the decision-making process in which individuals use analysis, facts, and a step-by-step approach to reach a decision.  This step-by-step process, known as the Rational Decision-Making Process, consists of the following actions: Establish goals and measure results, identify and analyze the problem, develop alternative solutions, evaluate alternative solutions, select the best solution, implement the decision, and follow up and evaluate the decision (Ivancevich et al. 2018).  As the course text states, this is a sequential process rather than a series of steps, as it “enables us to examine each element in the normal progression that leads to a decision” (Ivancevich et al., 2018, p. 374).  As leaders, an individual’s values can influence and affect each of these steps, as they are the guidelines a person implements when confronted with a situation in which a choice must be made (Ivancevich et al., 2018).  For example, when establishing goals and identifying the problem, leaders with ethical values will consider the input of his or her employees, as it is these individuals that are on the “front line” that will likely be impacted by the decisions made.  By considering employees’ opinions, leaders exude respect for their staff members, promoting a positive workplace morale.  When developing and evaluating alternatives and selecting and implementing the best solution, leaders with ethical values, such as respect, honesty, and empathy, will reflect upon how these alternatives affect others, aiming to choose the option that brings the greatest favorable outcomes to the most significant number of people.  Last, when conducting a follow-up on the decisions made, if there are undesirable, unethical effects to others noted, leaders with ethical values, such as accountability and integrity, will likely take corrective actions immediately to ensure morality is reestablished.
