We live in a very sensitive society. Many people from all different groups can be easily offended, whether it be because of race, religion, sexual identity, social status, etc. That is not at all to understate the effects of discrimination in this country, as they are indisputably real. The appendices of “Blindspot: Hidden Biases of Good People”, the excerpt from “The Coddling of the American Mind”, and the “Implicit Bias and Microaggressions” lecture touch on the issue quite eloquently.

Based on the concept of blindspots and other mindbugs, given to us by Dr. Banaji and Dr. Greenwald, we now understand more clearly how and why people predetermine their assumptions of others based on stereotypes and how shortsighted those assumptions can be. We also know, either from prior knowledge or from reading Lukianoff and Haidt’s article, just how acute and protective people can be regarding their demographic(s); these obsessive preferences that people have can even branch outside of matters, like creed or class, that have any true value, and with many it has reached a point of asininity. Dr. Sue’s lecture gave a detailed assessment of microaggressions perceived and endured by many different kinds of people, while specifically centering on the matter of race and the treatment of colored people. He also documents the spoken feelings of these individuals, as well as how suppressed bias and overt racism can go hand-in-hand with damaged views of that specific demographic as a whole.

With all these ideas now fresh in our minds, I have 2 questions:

1. Can you describe a time where you unintentionally discriminated against someone?

2. How have you evolved as a person since then?
