Case Scenario:

A middle-aged man who has recently moved to the U.S. from Mexico suffers a head injury at his workplace and is brought in unconscious. Hospital personnel phone his home to notify his family of his condition, only to find that no one in the household is fluent in English and they do not understand that their family member has been injured. There are no Spanish speakers on staff at the hospital, and there is no access to translator services. The staff is frustrated because the man’s family never shows up at the hospital. The man regains consciousness several hours later and is given written information about his condition. The information is in English, and no Spanish-language version is available.
