One concept if implemented well, it will create the most effective team dynamics and the true environment of success. A team leader often gets fooled by the name and thinks that by calling them a leader, it makes them automatically a good leader, where in fact it needs effort, commitment and time to deserve being called a leader. Being a leader means to get the best out of your team members and adding to what they can produce, many so-called leaders never attempt to add something to the team value and even worse when they stop others from adding!

Leaders don’t mind being powerless, what they care about is being influential. Using power doesn’t encourage people to be creative, it might control what they do but it can’t control what they think and want. Also, successfully juggling between the two important objectives of leading the people in the team and managing the work progress will create a more efficient and powerful team force.

2) Describe in detail how you can apply project management techniques to the risk communication project. See the project description to understand what the requirements are for the assignment and then create your project management plan.

Risk communication project is an important project that needs to follow the agreed upon project management steps that will ensure the success of the project. First, project initiation, in this step we will be getting all the involved organizations to be on-board about our project `s well as finding the main idea. Secondly, project planning, this step is the most important one because every following step will be built on this step. After getting approval and support, this step looks at writing what we will communicate to the audience as well as the timeframe and means of communication. Third, project execution, in this phase we will create our message and how we will communicate the risk to the audience in the ways agreed on by the entire team. Fourth, project monitoring and control, this phase is usually combined with the previous one. We will record and keep all the data from this project for evaluation and for future reference. Finally, project closure, the finished project will be delivered and the team will finalize their efforts by achieving the objectives.

3) Describe a SWOT analysis.

SWOT analysis is the study of an organization or an entity to identify their strengths and weaknesses, along with the possible threats to the organization and the opportunities that may be there for it. The organization’s probability for success can be determined by the process of identifying the risks and opportunities using SWOT. A strength means a way for the organization to get opportunities that are not attracted any other way, while weaknesses will eventually lead to making the organization more vulnerable to the threats.

The majority of people are unaware of the differences between leaders and the managers, and many of them think that as soon as people are working for them, they become leaders automatically. Unfortunately, this is a very wrong concept. The concept of a ‘leader’ goes beyond the responsibilities of a ‘manager. The differences between the two theories are significant. One of the most critical differences is that leaders have people who follow them, but the managers have people who work for them. Another notable difference, Leaders create a vision; managers create goals. Most people want to work with a leader who is passionate about where the organization is going – a leader that helps them engage in it and helps them see how their role contributes and aligns (or needs to re-align) to the organization’s strategy and culture(Voigt, Guariglia2015.) Managers focus on setting, measuring and achieving goals. They control situations to reach or exceed their objectives(Arruda, 2017). Also, leaders are unique, managers copy. Leaders are self-aware and work actively to build their unique and differentiated personal brand(Arruda, 2017). Managers mimic the competencies and behaviors they learn from others and adopt their leadership style rather than defining it(Arruda, 2017). I think that a combination of these theories would be the best of both worlds.

According to Project Management Institute (PMI), project management is the process whereby a single manager is responsible for planning, organizing, coordinating, directing and controlling the combined efforts of all functions and staff groups in accomplishing project objectives. Risk communication is the process of informing people about potential hazards to their person, property, or community. Scholars define risk communication as a science-based approach for communicating effectively in situations of high stress, high concern or controversy. As emergency managers, we are responsible for creating a risk communication plan. Hence, all the elements of project management are essential and ideally suited.

1-Define the project scope as a deliverable with measurable acceptance criteria.
2-Break down the scope into its vital deliverables for the work breakdown structure.
3-Identify the major project risks and their responses.
4-Identify the project team resource requirements with rough estimates of the time commitment.
5-Build the schedule.

3) Describe a SWOT analysis.

SWOT Analysis is a useful technique for understanding your Strengths and Weaknesses, and for identifying both the Opportunities open to you and the Threats you face. This type of analysis can be immensely useful when reflecting upon a group project. By applying the SWOT analysis criteria, a group can systematically discuss the quality of a group initiative.
