Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian Position Paper

You will write an 5-page (minimum) paper on ATD in which you take a position about one of the topics discussed about the book and/or topics presented throughout the semester. All lectures and discussions from the beginning of the semester lead up to our examination of ATD and this assignment, in particular. You will need at least 5 quotes from ATD. You will need a minimum of 3 scholarly sources with 2 quotes from each of the sources. The quotes from these sources will help support your ideas and opinions about your topic. Please DO NOT use Times New Roman, Calibri, or Cambria fonts for your paper. I suggest Arial as a good, all-around font. 20% of your overall grade.

Suggested Topics

1. Explore how Arnold uses art in the book. Choose at least 4 examples from each of the 3 types of drawings to examine and discuss:

Scribbled illustrations and comics (majority)—suggest Arnold is “jotting down thoughts in an immediate way”

More realistic cartoons with annotations (family members, situational comics)—suggest Arnold gave more thought and development

Penciled portraits—suggest “intimate situations” and that Arnold is “concentrating and focusing on his …subject”

2. Discuss aspects of Junior’s Hero’s Journey. How is Junior tested? What characters (or things) seem to fit other archetypal roles (mentor, trickster, shapeshifter, shadow, herald, threshold guardians)? What and when are Junior’s Supreme Ordeal, Road Back, Resurrection, and Return with the Elixir?
