By the end of the week students will
compose a research-based essay and informational brochure focusing on
Play and Exploration as Curriculum.

Part 1: Essay

In your essay, provide a comprehensive explanation of the following topics:

• How play and exploration relates to curriculum
• The adult role in play
• Environmental factors that affect play

Your essay should be 2000 words and should include at least four (4) citations. The sections should be clearly marked with headings
so that your instructor knows which points you are addressing. Follow
the guidelines for APA writing style. The title page and references page
do not count towards the minimum word amount for this assignment.

Part 2: Brochure

Create a research-based brochure for parents providing how to’s for setting up an environment to support play.

Be
sure to use all six panel areas on the brochure wisely and include a
solid balance between text and graphics. At least two (2) references
must be included on this brochure.

This week the topic is The Physical Environment. After completing your weekly text reading, reviewing the additional resources provided, and in doing your own outside research complete the following case study:

Step 1: Select a setting in which you can complete a one-hour observation of infants and toddlers. This can be done in a public, private or in-home center. Please note, a facility director or supervisor must authorize all observations. Write detailed notes (that include specific examples) on the physical environment to include:

• Evidence of a safe environment
• Evidence of a healthy environment
• Evidence of a learning environment
• Evidence that the staff’s goal is to advance physical and intellectual competence of infants and toddlers
• Look for evidence that the program supports social and emotional development and that staff members provide positive guidance and discipline with infants and toddlers
• Look for evidence that the program strives to establish positive and productive relationships with families
• Look for evidence that the program is well run, purposeful and responds to participant’s needs
• Look for evidence that the staff members conduct themselves in a professional manner
