In this project, you will conduct one of the following: practitioner
\ninterview, criminal court visit, police ride-along, or correctional
\nfacility visit. NOTE: If you believe it is impossible for you to
\ncomplete any <\/u>of these
\nexperiential exercises due to circumstances beyond your control, contact
\nyour instructor who will arrange for an alternative project.<\/p>\n

Practitioner Interview<\/u><\/p>\n

Your task is to interview an individual of your choice involved in
\nthe criminal justice system: a police officer, attorney, judge,
\nprobation officer, researcher, current or former inmate, etc. (Note:
\nMilitary personnel have the option of interviewing an equivalent person
\nin the military.) Should your “expert” not be listed here, contact your
\ninstructor.<\/p>\n

1) Provide the purpose of the paper and background information on the selected person.<\/p>\n

2) Record the person’s views on the criminal justice system\u2014whether
\nthe criminal justice system works, in what ways it doesn’t work, and the
\nfuture of the criminal justice system.<\/p>\n

3) Write the paper in a narrative format, detailing what you learned
\nas the result of speaking with this person. Do not submit a
\n“question-answer” paper.<\/p>\n

4) Compare and contrast what your expert practitioner had to say with
\nrelevant instructional material from this course. Additionally,
\ninclude one outside source that either supports or challenges what your
\nexpert practitioner said. <\/p>\n

5) When using the instructional material or other sources, properly
\ndocument and reference them, and cite all web sources. You must include
\nthe name your practitioner.<\/p>\n

Criminal Court Visit<\/u><\/p>\n

Your task is to visit a criminal court session. (Note: Military
\npersonnel have the option of visiting the military equivalent.)
\nDepending on when you attend, you could see a series of cases or only
\none case. Write your reflections on what you observed and how the
\nproceedings seemed to affect the administration of justice.<\/p>\n

1) Begin with a cover page with your name, project title, course, and date submitted.<\/p>\n

2) Write an introductory section explaining the purpose of the paper.<\/p>\n

4) Compare and contrast what you observed with relevant material.

Police Ride-Along<\/u><\/p>\n

This is an observational assignment that focuses on the use of
\ndiscretion by the police officers who patrol our communities. (Note:
\nMilitary personnel may participate in a ride-along with a military
\npolice officer.) Your task is to ride with a police officer for a few
\nhours and observe who is stopped and why. Who is arrested and why? How
\ndoes the use of discretion play into the patrol officer’s job?<\/p>\n

1) Begin with a cover page with your name, project title, course, and date submitted.<\/p>\n

2) Write an introductory section that includes the purpose of the
\npaper and information on the assignment of the officer, his or her
\ndepartment, and the date, time, and duration of the ride-along.<\/p>\n

3) Using a narrative format, provide the officer’s views on the use
\nof discretion in his or her job, then follow this with your observations
\nand conclusions based on his or her performance. Use the questions
\nabove to guide your observations and questions.<\/p>\n

4) Use research information from class materials to analyze the
\ninformation obtained. Additionally, include one outside source that
\neither supports or challenges what your officer said.<\/p>\n

5) When using the text or other sources properly document and reference them. The name of your officer must be included.<\/p>\n

Correctional Facility Visit<\/u><\/p>\n

Your task is to visit a correctional facility (adult, juvenile,
\nmilitary) and compare and contrast what you see with what the text
\nindicates.<\/p>\n

1) Begin with a cover page with your name, project title, course, and
\ndate submitted. 2) Write an introduction that provides the purpose of
\nthe paper and information concerning the facility visited.<\/p>\n

2) If possible, interview residents, administrators, and correctional
\nofficers. How do they view the correctional process? What are the pros
\nand cons of the types of facilities we have in the United States? How
\nhas corrections changed over the past ten years?<\/p>\n

3) Write the information down in a narrative format.<\/p>\n

4) Compare and contrast the information obtained with course
\nmaterial. Additionally, include one outside source that either supports
\nor challenges what you observed.<\/p>\n
