You are to write a 1200 word report (\u00b110%, so anything<\/p>\n

between 1080 and 1320 words) critically reviewing the<\/p>\n

following research paper<\/p>\n

Assessment Criteria<\/p>\n

Your report must include a brief description of the aims<\/li>\n

of the article you are reviewing<\/p>\n

You should critically examine the authors\u2019 choice of<\/li>\n

methods (you may use the questions we adapted from<\/p>\n

Greenhalgh & Taylor in session 6 \u2013 see overleaf)<\/p>\n

You must review some* of the statistics or graphs<\/li>\n

which have been used in relation to the context and the<\/p>\n

type of data which has been recorded. Have the authors<\/p>\n

justified their approach?<\/p>\n

You should cite at least three methods texts and\/or other<\/li>\n

studies that have been conducted in education to support<\/p>\n

your views. (E.g. if you feel that the author used an<\/p>\n

inappropriate test or didn\u2019t do the right \u201cchecking tests\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2013 use your lecture notes and other sources to explain<\/p>\n

why.).<\/p>\n

You can include some reflective commentary \u2013 do you<\/li>\n

find the results interesting, convincing, well-justified?<\/p>\n

You might also consider what you have learned from the<\/p>\n

authors\u2019 report which might have implications for your<\/p>\n

future quantitative research.<\/p>\n

The aim of this task is for you to critically explore at least<\/p>\n

some elements of the authors\u2019 quantitative approach. It is<\/p>\n

recommended that you briefly summarise how the authors\u2019<\/p>\n

methods might complement or support each other.<\/p>\n

You can use these questions as sub-headings if you wish.<\/p>\n

Explain that you are doing so when introducing the report<\/p>\n

(cite the EDU202 Powerpoint slides or explain how these<\/p>\n

are adapted from Greenhalgh & Taylor).<\/p>\n

PLEASE NOTE: You are not required to address all of these questions or all of the methods used in the paper.<\/p>\n

Question 1: Did the paper describe an important<\/li>\n

educational issue addressed via a clearly formulated<\/p>\n

question?<\/p>\n

Question 2: Was a quantitative approach appropriate?<\/li>\n

Question 3: How were the setting and the subjects<\/li>\n

selected?<\/p>\n

Question 4: What was the researcher\u2019s perspective, and<\/li>\n

has this been taken into account? <\/p>\n

(How have the authors\u2019 positionality or epistemological<\/p>\n

beliefs around quantitative methods been declared or<\/p>\n

implied?)<\/p>\n

Question 5: What methods did the researcher use for<\/li>\n

collecting data and are these described in enough detail?<\/p>\n

Question 6: What methods did the researcher use to<\/li>\n

analyse the data and what quality control measures were<\/p>\n

implemented? (Assumption checks like Shapiro-Wilk<\/p>\n

etc.)<\/p>\n

Question 7: Are the results credible, and if so, are they<\/li>\n

educationally important?<\/p>\n

Question 8: What conclusions were drawn, and are they<\/li>\n

justified by the results?<\/p>\n

Question 9: Are the findings of the study transferable to<\/li>\n

other educational settings?<\/p>\n

Question 10: Has anything in this paper made me change<\/li>\n

how I will approach reading or reporting quantitative<\/p>\n

research in future?<\/p>\n

Notes on referencing:<\/p>\n

Include the full reference for the paper you are reviewing at<\/p>\n

the end of the task. You don\u2019t need to keep referencing it<\/p>\n

within the text itself, instead just use page numbers (p. 4) to indicate where you are referring to parts of the paper.<\/p>\n

When you use other sources like methods texts or other<\/p>\n

research, reference them as usual with a citation in the text<\/p>\n

(Connolly, 2001, p. 43) and an entry in the reference list at the<\/p>\n

end of the task.<\/p>\n

Notes on advanced methods:<\/p>\n

Some of the papers may involve statistical techniques that you<\/p>\n

have not yet covered.<\/p>\n

You can still review these papers using the questions<\/p>\n

above! You can comment on how clearly the author has<\/p>\n

explained the purpose and appropriateness of their chosen<\/p>\n

method. You can also consider how clearly the author has<\/p>\n

reported their results.<\/p>\n
