Hi I have a philosophy presentation and I need to do some modifications on the previous work I have done following the instructions my professor gave me. I am uploading the Spinoza’s text and the powerpoint for the presentation. Please make modifications in the file and also send me a word document with a speech about each slide on the powerpoint. Keep in mind it is a philosophy presentation so I will need to be able to teach the students and not just summarize the text. Here is what my professor sent me about my powerpoint:

I have read through the PowerPoint presentation that you sent to me, and I have the following observations to make (in no special order):

— it seems to me that this presentation may include much too much repetition of details from the article (that is, repetition of direct quotations from the article) and not enough explanation of the main point or the main argument of the article. It is clear that it is not really easy to understand the philosophy of Spinoza (or Hampshire), but the presentation should aim at “teaching” the other students what the main argument is, and not just repeating some of the details or quotations from the argument. One way in which you might try to “teach” the other students is to try to explain to them how Spinoza’s view of human freedom is similar to or different from some of the other views that we have seen so far in this course. For example, you might be able to “teach” the other students, if you are able to raise and answer these questions for them:

1. Is Spinoza a determinist about natural events and causes? and how does this make Spinoza similar to or different from other thinkers we have seen?

2. Is Spinoza a compatibilist or incompatibilist regarding the relation of human freedom to deterministic causality?

3. As Hampshire says, Spinoza tries to reject and overcome the limitations of the Cartesian philosophy (the “Cartesian” philosophy is the philosophy of Descartes); so what is the basic difference between Spinoza and Descartes? Hint: a really big difference between Spinoza and Descartes has to do with their competing views of the relationship between what is mental (ideas/thought) and what is bodily; what does Descartes think about mind and body (the mental and the bodily), and how does Spinoza disagree with Descartes on mind and body? For more on this, see page 561: Descartes endorses a mind-body dualism; by contrast, Spinoza denies any mind-body dualism. So Spinoza holds that any change in the body is mirrored/accompanied by a change in thought, and any change in thought is mirrored/accompanied by a change in the body. As Hampsire suggests (quoting from Professor Matson at the bottom of page 561), the relation of body to thought is much like the relation of type/letters/inscriptions to meaning.

— Some important statements in the article which might be worthwhile to discuss and/or explain include the following listed below (and so it might be helpful if you explained to the other students what these important statements mean). Of course, it is understood that you will not have time to explain all of these quotations listed below. But some discussion and explanation of them (at least some of them, especially the crucial ones) might help you to “teach” the other students about Spinoza.

page 555: “This activity of mind constitutes the freedom of the subject.” What activity? And why does mental activity constitute freedom?

page 555: when someone is “more active,” they “enjoy more freedom of mind.” Why?

page 558: the objects of a person’s passive emotions “are not the true causes of them” (that is, not the true causes of their emotions). How can this be true?

page 559: every person (including the reader of Spinoza’s philosophy) is “interested at all times in increasing his own powers of liberty in relation to external things.”

page 560: what does it mean to say (as part of the “turning point” in Spinoza’s thought) that Spinoza is able to “maintain the stance of a prescriptive moralist while still holding to the thesis of determinism”?

page 560: what is meant by this really crucial claim that Hampshire attributes to Spinoza?: “If the thought of the causes of my belief, or my desire, or my fear, is changed, the belief, or desire, or fear itself is changed. When the subject’s conception of the cause is changed, the object of the belief, desire, or fear is usually changed also; for we cannot clearly specify the object of the belief, desire, or emotion without considering what determines us to have this state of mind or attitude, and what would change it.”

page 564: a partial (though not complete) depiction of Spinoza’s philosophy can be encapsulated in this idea: “the agent’s freedom consists in the recognition of the necessary connections which science discovers” — how can freedom consist in a recognition of necessity?

page 565: what is meant by this really crucial claim that Hampshire attributes to Spinoza?: “The subject’s thought of the object of the emotion (what he fears, is angry with and about) and of the propositional attitudes includes a thought about the cause or occasion: if his thought of the cause or occasion is substantially changed, his thought of the object will be changed; and if the subject’s thought of the object is changed, his dispositions and behavior are correspondingly changed.”

page 565: what is meant by this really crucial claim that Hampshire attributes to Spinoza?: “It follows that if a man’s beliefs about his own states of mind are changed, as a result of systematic reflection on causes and of a better understanding of the psychological laws involved, his emotions and his attitudes change also.”
