The Assignment:<\/span>How do you represent yourself online? How are the groups that you are a part of represented? <\/span>For <\/span>this essay, you will <\/span>choose a <\/span>social group in which you participate<\/span>,<\/span>and <\/span>discuss how <\/span>its visual <\/span>representation<\/span>in popular culture (especially online culture) <\/span>has changed over time<\/span>. You will choose <\/span>3<\/span>–<\/span>5<\/span>examples throughout its iconographic <\/span>(visual) <\/span>history that you feel best illustrate how the <\/span>concept\/image has evolved. <\/span>What do the variations on the theme suggest about the cultures\/time <\/span>periods in which they appe<\/span>ar? <\/span>You will be including the images in the body of your paper, so t<\/span>he <\/span>emphasis here is not on the <\/span>images them<\/span>sel<\/span>ves<\/span>, but rather on the cultural context; that is, <\/span>while you <\/span>will spend <\/span>some <\/span>time describing the images, <\/span>you will spend less time describing the<\/span>icon as you will <\/span>connecting that image to its time and culture.<\/span>For example, you might discuss the <\/span>portrayal of professors<\/span>:<\/span>1.<\/span>A <\/span>painting of Professor Moriarty from Sherlock Holmes<\/span>2.<\/span>A <\/span>video clip from <\/span>Indiana Jones <\/span>3.<\/span>A <\/span>negative meme from the internet<\/span>4.<\/span>A <\/span>positiv<\/span>e post from Pinterest or Instagram<\/span>What do these four images tell us about the cultures which produced them: their priorities, their <\/span>beliefs, etc.<\/span>? <\/span>Note that this is NOT a traditional research paper: \u201cWhy has vegetarianism increased over the past <\/span>100 years?\u201d is not an appropriate topic. \u201cHow have vegetarians been represented in popular <\/span>culture?\u201d, though, is. This is a research paper <\/span>ABOUT <\/span>visual image<\/span>s, not a research paper that <\/span>happens to include illustrations.
