\nChoose a specific visual work to analyze for your Media Analysis Project (MAP). Your project can be on any media; print, photography, television, film, the Internet, etc. You will explore this topic in detail by using the six perspectives. Choose something in which you have a personal interest. If you choose television, feel free to focus on a specific series (not just one episode). If you choose the Internet, focus on a particular website.
\nYou must obtain instructor approval on your topic. Submit your topic as a one paragraph written proposal. Explain not just what your topic is, but also why you chose it.
\nOnce you select a topic and it has been approved, begin to conduct your research.
\nThe Six Perspectives and Static Imagery
\nThe following is adapted from the work of Paul Martin Lester.
\nIn order to find meaning from a visual message, you need to learn a systematic way for studying images.
\n1.\tMake an inventory list of every element in the image,
\n2.\tNote the lighting used in the image,
\n3.\tNote any eye contact by subjects in the image,
\n4.\tNote the visual cues of color, form, depth, and movement,
\n5.\tNote how the gestalt laws apply toward the composition of picture,
\n6.\tNote any semiotic signs that are a part of the image’s content, and
\nWhen you’ve gone through the six steps noted above, it’s time to apply the six perspectives for visual analysis to the piece. Each perspective is noted below.
\nPersonal Perspective – Gut Reaction

\n1.\tWhat is the picture’s story?
\n2.\tList primary words.
\n3.\tList associative words.
\n4.\tSelect most significant associative words.
\n5.\tPair up primary & most significant associative words.
\n6.\tRelate word pairs with your own feelings.
\n7.\tRelate any inner symbolism.
\n8.\tWrite a brief story concerning personal insights.
\nHistorical Perspective – The image’s place in history

\n\u2022\tIs there a specific style that the image imitates?
\nTechnical Perspective – Consider the process decisions
\n\u2022\tHow was the image produced?
\n\u2022\tWhat techniques were employed?
\n\u2022\tIs the image of good quality?
\nEthical Perspective – Moral Responsibility
\n\u2022\tWas the image maker socially responsible?
\n\u2022\tHas any person’s rights been violated?
\n\u2022\tAre the needs of viewers met?
\n\u2022\tIs the picture aesthetically appealing?
\n\u2022\tDo the picture choices reflect moderation?
\n\u2022\tIs the image maker empathetic with the subject?
\n\u2022\tCan all the image choices be justified?
\n\u2022\tDoes the visual message cause unjustified harm?
\nCultural Perspective – Societal Impact
