This week we watched two video interviews with astrophysicist Neil
\ndeGrasse Tyson talking about the relationship between science and
\nreligion. In the short video by The Big Think, Tyson says that it is
\n\u201cempirically false\u201d that science is incompatible with religion, because
\n40% of American scientists say they \u201cpray to a personal God.\u201d Tyson
\nconcludes from this that there is no inherent reason that science and
\nreligion must conflict. But notice that he goes on to say that religion
\nshould be kept out of the science classroom. So he does seem to think
\nthere is some sort of conflict between religion and science. This comes
\nout more clearly in the longer video interview by Bill Moyers where
\nTyson says explicitly that faith and reason are impossible to reconcile
\nand implies that science is gradually replacing religion by explaining
\nall the mysteries in the universe. The only reason a scientist could
\nrationally be religious, Tyson concludes, is for \u201cemotional
\nfulfillment.\u201d Thus he seems to think that religion is okay as long as it
\nmerely a matter of private feelings and is kept out of the public
\ndomain of facts.<\/p>\n

\nrealities and sources of truth like God or the Bible? If not, why not?
\nIf so, how? Be as specific as possible. For example, section 1.3 of this
\nweek\u2019s Recommended Reading from the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy<\/em>
\nmentions four possibilities for the relationship between science and
\nreligion: Conflict, Integration, Independence, and Dialogue. You might
\nthink science and religion make contradictory claims about the same
\nthings (Conflict) or that they make compatible claims about the same
\nthings (Integration), or that make claims about completely different
\nthings or perhaps that they make different kinds of claims about the
\nsame thing (Independence), or that they have something to teach each
\nother, perhaps by clarifying each other\u2019s questions, methods, limits, or
\nmeaning (Dialogue). Note that we\u2019re not<\/em> looking for reasons that religious beliefs are or are not true. Rather we\u2019re looking for an explanation for how<\/em> religious beliefs could possibly coexist with scientific beliefs \u2013 or why they can\u2019t.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
