\nAmong your current products are radio receivers of all types, CD
\nplayers, MP3 players, components for home entertainment systems, car stereo
\ncomponents, boomboxes, amplifiers, speakers and even clock radios.<\/p>\n

You have a functional organization of over 10,000 that spans
\nmany time zones. Your business unit designs its products in the U.S. and
\nmanufactures them in Asia. Your primary markets are in North America and
\nEurope.\u00a0 Your direct reports include a
\nCFO who leads the Finance organization and VPs for Marketing, Engineering,

\nopen).<\/p>\n

You have narrowed your search for a new VP of Engineering
\ndown to three excellent candidates.\u00a0 They
\nare 1) John Adams, a seasoned leader\u00a0
\nwithin the current Engineering organization,\u00a0 2) Mark Lawson, the Senior Engineering
\nManager of the new products development group, and 3) Susan Hernandez, a Senior
\nEngineering Manager at Cre8, your #1 competitor\u2019s product design organization.\u00a0 You know Adams and Lawson quite well.\u00a0 You are acquainted with Hernandez through a
\ntrade association and are aware of her excellent reputation in the industry.<\/p>\n

John Adams has been with the company for 15 years.\u00a0 He is 55 years of age and has a BS degree in
\nMechanical Engineering as well as a MS in Engineering Management from Southern
\nMethodist University.\u00a0 Earlier in his
\ncareer he was an innovator in packaging design.\u00a0 In the past few years he has driven process
\nand technology selection that has significantly reduced the production cost of
\nseveral of the company\u2019s \u201cflywheel\u201d products. <\/p>\n

Mark Lawson has been with the company 8 years and he is 46
\nyears of age.\u00a0 He is an electrical
\nengineer by training and received his MBA from Texas A&M University \u2013 Commerce
\ntwo years ago.\u00a0 Mark has a reputation as
\nsomething of a visionary, an inspiring team builder and a team player.\u00a0 His intuition and insight on product features
\nthat Customers will \u201cpay extra\u201d for is in a word, uncanny.\u00a0 New products his teams have brought to the
\nmarket in the last three years account for slightly more than half of the
\ndivision\u2019s current annual sales.<\/p>\n

Susan Hernandez has been with your competitor for 4 years
\nand is 38 years of age.\u00a0 Her educational
\nbackground is in Software Engineering and she holds a MBA from Stanford
\nUniversity.\u00a0 Susan has worked for
\nseveral high-tech firms in Silicon Valley.\u00a0
\nWith the exception of Cre8 she has not stayed with any of her employers
\nfor more than 3 years.\u00a0 She has been
\nsomething of a \u201cstar performer\u201d for Cre8 and is that rare mix of engineering
\nexpertise, artist and unabashed \u201cmarketeer\u201d.\u00a0
\nIn fact, the latest MP3 player her group launched 6 months ago is
\n\u201ckicking your butt\u201d in sales.<\/p>\n
