Research Project<\/b><\/p>\n

The
\nResearch Project entails an annotated bibliography and a book review.\u00a0
\nBoth the book and the items in the annotated bibliography should be on a
\ntopic related to one of the policy areas listed below.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Both the topic and the book must be approved. The project is due by 11:55 pm on June 23^{rd<\/sup>.\u00a0<\/p>\n}

Policy Areas:<\/b><\/p>\n

\n
• Climate Change<\/li>\n
• Economy (tax policies, income inequality, minimum wage, etc.)<\/li>\n
• Health Care (Tort reform; \u201cObamacare\u201d; etc.)<\/li>\n
• Immigration<\/li>\n
• Energy (oil; fracking; drilling; pipelines, etc.)<\/li>\n
• Criminal Justice (legalization of drugs; death penalty; mass incarceration; gun rights\/gun control, etc.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

  The book must meet the following requirements:<\/b><\/p>\n

  \n
  • The book must focus on a particular policy or policy area,<\/li>\n
  • It can be written by an author from any political perspective<\/li>\n
  • Must focus on the US or US policy<\/li>\n
  • Must have been written in the last twenty years<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Only certain items will be acceptable for the bibliography.\u00a0 These include: <\/b><\/p>\n

    \n
    • Articles from academic peer reviewed journals;<\/li>\n
    • Reports
      \nor studies prepared and issued by a government agency, a think tank
      \n(e.g. Urban Institute; American Enterprise Institute; Brookings
      \ninstitution; Heritage Foundation) or a foundation (e.g. Ford
      \nFoundation).\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Structure: <\/b><\/p>\n

      \n
      • Part I \u2013 Introduction to the topic<\/li>\n
      • Part II \u2013 Annotated Bibliography<\/li>\n
      • Part III \u2013 Book review<\/li>\n
      • Part IV \u2013 Conclusion<\/li>\n
      • Part V \u2013 List of References,<\/li>\n
      • Part VI \u2013 Copies of the title page of each article\/report<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Annotated Bibliography <\/b><\/p>\n

        The
        \nannotated bibliography should include at least six articles related to
        \nthe topic found in academic journals, scholarly reports or studies.\u00a0 One
        \nway to find academic journal articles is through the JSTOR database.\u00a0
        \nYou may also use EBSCO, but be sure to only include articles from
        \nacademic journals.\u00a0 You must include the following for each source:<\/p>\n

        \n
        • The title and full citation of the article<\/li>\n
        • A
          \n1-2 paragraph description of the article that describes what it is
          \nabout, what sources of information the author(s) rely upon, and what the
          \nauthor(s) concluded.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          The
          \nbibliography should also include a concluding section that notes any
          \nrecurring themes, points of debate, or points of disagreement or
          \ndifference within these articles.\u00a0<\/p>\n

          Book Review<\/b><\/p>\n

          Must be at least four pages, well-written (with appropriate citations if necessary), and include the following information:<\/p>\n

          \n
          • An
            \noverview of what the book is about \u2013 including description of the
            \napproach the author is taking.\u00a0 (i.e., Is this an attempt to answer a
            \nset of research questions? Is it an argument on behalf of a particular
            \npolicy or agenda? etc.)<\/li>\n
          • A detailed discussion of the main points in the book (can be chapter by chapter, but does not have to be).<\/li>\n
          • A
            \ndescription of the sources of information the author(s) rely upon for
            \nevidence (e.g. personal experience, anecdotal information, surveys,
            \narchival research, interviews, data sets, statistical data\/analyses
            \netc.)<\/li>\n
          • Strengths and weaknesses of the book (in terms of the content, and reliability of the information \u2013 not in terms of entertainment<\/b>)<\/li>\n
          • Compare
            \nand contrast the book with the articles listed in your bibliography \u2013
            \npoints of agreement and\/or difference, sources of information or
            \nevidence.\u00a0 Does the book fit with the \u201cacademic literature\u201d on this
            \ntopic?\u00a0 Explain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
