Use your imagination: It is 1913. You are an experienced and frequent attendee for orchestral “Classical Music” concerts. You will be attending a concert in which a piece will be heard for the first time: a World Premiere! The composer is well respected, yet innovative: a boundary pusher. The piece is on your listening list: Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring” (while this is only a smaller excerpt from the larger work, it gives a good picture of the piece). What would your reaction to this piece be? What about those seated around you in the auditorium? What would you tell your friends/co-workers about the piece the next day? Remember, they couldn’t post things online in 1913…..
