Question 1:

Discuss how enabling a child’s “gender self-determination” (first link) might erode our cultural tendency to adopt “gender constancy” (second link). How might efforts toward “queer parenting” be constrained by gendered institutions and deeply ingrained cultural assumptions about the gender binary? Which way of learning about gender self-determination or constancy – most reflects what you learned as a child? How do you feel now? Would you try “genderqueer parenting” with your own children (now or in the future)? Why or why not?

Had you thought about the skirt lengths in “The Balancing Act of Being Female” (first link)) before? Have you or someone you have observed ever miscalculated and felt inappropriate or out of place? How do the norms around skirt lengths relate to the use of high heels as a form of distinction in “High Heels and Distinction among Women” (second link)? What are some other types of clothing and physical markers that denote membership in a category? Do we also “do” race, class, sexual orientation, American-ness, and other identities? How does doing those things interact with how we do gender, making the balancing act all the more complicated?

How do the problems of gender equity in politics described in “Shattering the Glass Ceiling for Women in Politics” (first link) relate to the problems of women in business in “Lean In and 1% Feminism” (second link)? What is similar about the corporate and political worlds, and what is different? What is your orientation toward career aspirations and politics? Do you think either of these are affected by your gender? Why or why not? Do you think readings might change what you think is possible for yourself? How so?
