Term Paper: Mobile Computing and Social Networks

There are thousands of iPhone Apps, iPad Apps, and Android Apps that have been developed to perform a myriad of tasks and processes. Initially, most of these applications were games intended to be played on mobile devices. The popularity of these applications led businesses to ponder whether some of their business process applications that run on desktop platforms and the Web could be redesigned to run on mobile devices. The answer was a resounding yes! For example, Nationwide developed the Nationwide® Mobile, a free iPhone App that allows its insurance policyholders to file a claim on the spot when an accident occurs. The application can snap pictures of the accident and attach them to the claim data and upload the claim information to a server. This reduces the length of time to process a claim filed this way. Nationwide competitors have followed suit and developed iPhone, iPad, and Android applications of their own. Policyholders can receive messages via Facebook or Twitter. Other business processes that have been reengineered as a result of mobile computing include Quick Response (QR) codes which have replaced one-dimensional bar codes. They are read using mobile devices, accepting credit card payments from an iPhone, iPad or Android device, depositing checks using an iPhone without visiting a bank, and many more. Write a ten page term paper in which you:

·       Assess the effectiveness and efficiency mobile-based applications provide to capture geo-location data and customer data, and quickly upload to a processing server without users having to use a desktop system.

·       Evaluate benefits realized by consumers because of the ability to gain access to their own data via mobile applications.

·       Examine the challenges of developing applications that run on mobile devices because of the small screen size.

·       Describe the methods that can be used to decide which platform to support, i.e., iPhone, iPad, Windows Phone, or Android.

·       Mobile applications require high availability because end users need to have continuous access to IT and IS systems.

·       Discuss ways of providing high availability.

·       Mobile devices are subjected to hacking at a higher rate than non-mobile devices. Discuss methods of making mobile devices more secure.

·       Use at least three (3) quality resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and similar Websites do not qualify as quality resources.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

·       Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.

·       Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

Assignment Name: Unit 2 Individual Project
Deliverable Length: 1 page
Details:

In this project, you will use the Travel Tips 3 document and add a table, a bulleted list, and a page border. To view these instructions while working in Word, do either of the following:

  • Print this page of instructions.
  • Move back and forth between this page and Word by clicking each application’s button on the Windows taskbar.

Open the document Travel Tips 3, save it on your computer, and open it in Word.

When you follow these steps, this assignment must be finished and still fit on 1 page. Please be sure to work with font sizes or resize the Word art at the bottom to make room if necessary. You may also remove additional paragraph marks if they do not ruin the general look and feel of the document. Remember, this assignment requires you to use the starting document and have an improved but relatively similar-looking end product.

Windows Instructions:

  1. Open the Travel Tips 3 document from the link provided above.
  2. Next, be sure that you have the show/hide button selected on the toolbar. This is the button usually located on the Home tab, Paragraph section of the ribbon next to the Sort button and looks like a backwards P. The Show/Hide button reveals all of the non-printing word-processing control information, like the arrows for tabs, the section and page breaks, and the backward Ps, which are paragraph marks.
  3. Please take note of the lines labeled “Section Break.”
    1. Section 1 is considered to be above the first section break line.
    2. Section 2 is considered to be above the second section break line.
    3. Section 3 is considered to be below the second section break line.
  4. In section 2, there is a paragraph that starts with the words “You need identification.” Select this paragraph all the way up to the second-to-last paragraph of section 2, ending with the words “excess baggage.”
  5. Apply numbering to these paragraphs (Home menu > Numbering button). Select any style of numbering available by clicking on the down arrow next to the numbering button. Use your best judgment on what looks good.
  6. Anywhere in Section 3, insert a 3 row by 3 column table. Type the names of 9 major cities into the table, one city per cell.
  7. Use the Table Styles feature to give the table a more professional look. First, clear all the check boxes; then, select the appropriate check boxes to apply special formats to heading rows and the first column. Center the table on the page.
  8. Highlight all of the cells in the table, and apply bullets to the entire table so that each city has a bullet next to it and there are no additional bullets around the table (Home menu > Bullets button). There should be only 9 bullets in the table.
  9. Include an Art Page border.
  10. Create a header (Insert > Header) with the following text: Travel the World, Get Advice Here. Left-justify this text in the header, make it bold, and change its font size to between 14–16 points.
  11. Put the date in the footer (Insert > Footer). Left-justify the date in the footer (Insert > Date & Time).

Nursing statistics

There is often the requirement to evaluate descriptive statistics for data within the organization or for health care information. Every year the National Cancer Institute collects and publishes data based on patient demographics. Understanding differences between the groups based upon the collected data often informs health care professionals towards research, treatment options, or patient education.

Using the data on the “National Cancer Institute Data” Excel spreadsheet, calculate the descriptive statistics indicated below for each of the Race/Ethnicity groups. Refer to your textbook and the Topic Materials, as needed, for assistance in with creating Excel formulas.

Provide the following descriptive statistics: Measures of Central Tendency: Mean, Median, and Mode Measures of Variation: Variance, Standard Deviation, and Range (a formula is not needed for Range). 2004 dover trail judgment dat transcript 1

In this module, you will apply your understanding of the scientific method, critical thinking, rationality and reflective judgment to a real-world event depicted in a documentary on the 2004 Dover, PA court case regarding the teaching of creationism in a public middle school. You will acquire a better understanding of scientific theories and hypotheses and how science differs from other approaches to the natural world.

Instructions:

STEP 1: To successfully complete this learning unit, watch this episode (in its entirety) from the NOVA series: Judgment Day Video

Or you can read the transcript here: Judgment Day Transcript

STEP 2: Write a 250-350 word (maximum) brief report on the Dover PA case. In your brief report, address all 3 issues below.

Make sure to refer to information presented throughout the video, that is, your report should make clear that you watched the entire video.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN:

This is a Brief Report, not an essay so please address each question directly– you do not need to include introductory information, etc.

Make sure to address all three of the questionsas posed. Recall that an essential first step in critical thinking is identifying and clarifying the question and then addressing it. Doing this will serve you very well in the future. For example, if an employer asks you for a report on a particular issue, or asks you a particular question in a job interview, it is essential that you actually answer the question as posed.

Producing a beautiful answer that does not actually address the questions as posed is a common error that college students make. Please keep this in mind as you are responding to the following questions:

1. Cite evidence of pre-reflective and reflective judgment as they were expressed by the participants in the Dover trial.

2. Briefly describe what the central issue in the case was and the Judge’s ruling and why he ruled as he did.

3. Identify likely examples of cognitive dissonance experienced by the participants in the Dover trial and also how they may have resolved their dissonance.
