Can you please respond to this discussion…

1) The Brain and Consciousness

I’ve always felt that consciousness
is a realm that lies outside the brain. For example, someone in a coma
is not conscious, but their brain is still functioning and sending
signals to the heart and lungs to continue functioning. I feel the same
as when we sleep, we are not conscious but our brain is still
functioning. This question really makes me wonder about the relationship
between consciousness and our brains though. Without consciousness, I
wouldn’t be here typing this discussion response right now. But at the
same time, I can still survive without consciousness.

2) Do you think consciousness is dependent on one key brain area? Or does

consciousness emerge from the interaction of the workings of our whole

brain?Do you think consciousness is dependent on one key brain area? Or does

consciousness emerge from the interaction of the workings of our whole

brain? For food for thought, see this New Scientist article https://www.newscientist.com/article/mg22329762-70…(which was

found and shared in by a previous student in this course). What brain

area are they talking about in the article? What role does it seem to

play in consciousness? Remember too, that one article isn’t the final

word — there are many other theories out there. If you come across a

different theory, share it with us!
